Unmanned aerial vehicles have become an integral part of the modern world. In the Ukraine-Russia war, these machines play perhaps the most important role. They gather intelligence, carry out strikes, deliver supplies, track and observe. Drones come in a variety of models, including FPV drones. They have become the most popular solution for combat operations. How do they differ from other types of UAVs, what are their advantages and disadvantages, and in what situations are they most effective? Let's take a closer look in this article.

What are FPV drones and how do they differ from standard UAVs?

FPV drones are capable of transmitting a signal in real time - here and now. They receive information through modern cameras and send it to the operator's goggles, helmet or computer screen. This allows the operator to receive information instantly - just as if he could see it directly from the cockpit. The pilot is far away from the machine, but sees everything it sees at the same time.

The concept of UAVs is broader. It covers all drones - both small quadcopters, which are often used for civilian purposes, and large systems that operate almost autonomously. These UAVs can operate without constant monitoring, follow prescribed routes, and fly over long distances. UAVs do not require constant monitoring by an operator via video communication.

You can compare the characteristics and capabilities of FPV and other UAVs using the table below.

What should you consider when choosing the type of UAV to perform different tasks?

The main advantages and disadvantages of both types

In which military and civilian tasks are FPV drones superior to classic UAVs? There is a reason why they have gained immense popularity and are increasingly used in military operations. FPV drones have a number of advantages:

  • Ultra-high accuracy, which allows the pilot to guide the drone to the target without error. This is very important in conducting strike missions. .
  • Manoeuvrability in various conditions - FPV drones are more manoeuvrable, able to pass through obstacles in difficult conditions and wooded areas.
  • Speed and compactness - relatively small size and light weight make the devices less noticeable to the enemy.
  • Cost - the price of an FPV drone is less than the cost of more complex and larger vehicles. In case of loss of the vehicle, the damage to the financial condition of the unit will not be so great.

FPV drones are actively used not only in combat situations. In the civilian sector, such devices are used for surveying, inspecting hard-to-reach objects, and for various races and competitions.

When is it more appropriate to use large unmanned aerial vehicles? Such machines are used mainly in missions where there is a need for autonomy, range and duration of flight, for example:

  • reconnaissance missions carried out over long distances;
  • observations over large areas;
  • delivery of goods.

It is the best choice for long missions over long distances where high manoeuvrability and real-time camera data are not required.

How does training at ArmDrones help you master FPV drones?

Ukrainians today make choices for people. In times of war, FPV drones have become the most popular modification of aircraft. But it is worth knowing that without professional control and understanding of the principles of operation of such machines, they will not be effective. Flying a drone requires special training. And it's not just about physical and emotional components. It requires knowledge ranging from design and engineering to understanding the principles of AI. Training at the ArmDrones specialised school allows you to gain a theoretical understanding of drones and master practical flying skills. Course participants learn:

  • collect drones and conduct their setting;
  • fly in the simulator and in real conditions (at the training ground);
  • Understand the principles of communication protocols;
  • work in compliance with safety regulations;
  • repair the devices;
  • use drones in simulated combat situations.

ArmDrones School trains engineers and operators of FPV drones who will be able to join the fight for Ukraine's victory in the future. Training is a necessity. It is impossible to operate a drone effectively without knowledge and practical experience.

Which drone to choose and where to learn to fly

FPV drones or UAVs? The former are manoeuvrable and effective in situations where information is needed here and now, when the outcome of the mission depends on accuracy and speed. They are brilliant at performing tasks that cannot be done without manoeuvrability and the ability to avoid obstacles. Large UAVs will come in handy where autonomy, endurance, and the ability to carry cargo are important. How effective will this or that vehicle be in different missions? It all depends on how well the machine is chosen for the task.

In any case, the use of drones requires professional knowledge and practical experience, which can be acquired in modern schools with drone control. ArmDrones provides training in theory and practice and gives everyone the opportunity to learn how to fly FPV drones and contribute to Ukraine's victory.
