The emergence of new unmanned aerial vehicles in the skies over the battlefield of Ukraine and Russia always involves the work of many specialists. These are not only developers and engineers who create the bodies and software for drones, but also testers who carry out crucial launches and checks before they are deployed on the battlefield.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are currently actively testing FPV bomber drones, which are capable of performing several tasks at once, including reconnaissance, surveillance, targeted strikes, ammunition delivery, and evacuation from the battlefield. Bombers are multifunctional and promise to revolutionise the tactics of the Armed Forces. They combine mobility, manoeuvrability, autonomy and high efficiency. In this article, we will look at the key characteristics of FPV bomber drones, how they affect the course of hostilities and what their future prospects are.

How FPV bomber drones differ from classic FPV drones

Classical FPV drones are, in most models, disposable aircraft that destroy the target along with themselves (kamikaze). This method of use allows the use of simple designs, not the most expensive components. Production takes a short amount of time. The challenge is to create many drones in a short time. These drones are widely used at the frontline, but have a rather narrow functionality.

Compared to FPV bombers, there are significant differences: the new generation of drones do not destroy themselves along with the target. They use other methods, including drops. After the munition is delivered, the drone returns to the base. In addition to strike missions, such drones also perform other work, such as video reconnaissance, providing real-time information.

What are multifunctional FPV bombers

The multifunctional FPV bomber is not just a tool for target destruction and reconnaissance. The developers have created a platform that combines functions:

  • Aerial reconnaissance - installed high-quality cameras and modules allow for real-time image transmission.
  • Strike drone - uses drops to deliver ammunition and send it to the target.
  • Vehicles - used to deliver critical cargo such as medicines and ammunition.
  • Evacuation module - if necessary, the drone can pick up equipment, black boxes, etc. from the point.
  • Reuse - the drone returns to the base after completing the task).

Technical features of the new models

The new FPV bomber models currently undergoing testing are designed and assembled in accordance with the highest standards of quality and functionality:

  • Reinforced carbon fibre frame that can withstand loads of up to 5kg.
  • A hybrid navigation system that combines GPS, inertial navigation and visual tracking functions.
  • Autonomous return system - allows the drone to return even if it loses contact with the operator.
  • Modular design - you can change the equipment depending on the task at any location.
  • The discharges are not a single charge, but up to three independently controlled munitions.
  • Time in the air - can last up to 25 minutes, with the possibility of expanding with new generation batteries.

These are no longer classic FPVs. This is a powerful new generation weapon that is leading Ukraine to victory.

Advantages of multifunctional FPV drones for the Armed Forces of Ukraine

FPV bombers are superior to other drones in many ways. They are cost-effective (they can be used many times), flexible in use, which allows them to quickly change tasks even during the flight (reconnaissance, strike, delivery, evacuation). These unmanned aerial vehicles place less of a burden on logistics - one platform can serve as several types of drones. Strikes by the Armed Forces of Ukraine have become more effective, and information gathering is easier and faster. Testing of FPV bombers will allow us to put new birds in the sky - those that can fly for a long time and efficiently. Alongside the testing of the drones, we are also training specialist operators who will become reliable partners for the bombers.

Prospects for implementation and mass production

What should we expect next? After the first successful tests, the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and a number of volunteer engineering initiatives are negotiating the mass production of FPV bombers. The goal is to involve local manufacturers who have already established production and can start working right away. Another requirement for the contractor is to have component production and combat experience, which will help them understand how it works. One option is to gradually re-equip existing FPV workshops to produce multifunctional FPV platforms.

Experts estimate that the first serial FPV bombers could be delivered to units as early as autumn 2025. Their introduction is planned primarily in units operating in difficult conditions, such as reconnaissance, reconnaissance and special forces.

The significance of new FPV bombers for changes in the tactics of the Ukrainian Armed Forces

The emergence of multifunctional FPV drones could change the tactics of the Ukrainian Armed Forces at the grassroots level. Thanks to multifunctional platforms, units will be able to use universal systems, which will increase efficiency and reduce the burden on logistics. This approach will open up new opportunities:

  • Strike-reconnaissance-return operations without the risk of losing equipment.
  • Trap drones that simulate self-destruction but are stored for reuse.
  • New types of raids and targeted attacks with the ability to change the plan on the fly.

Multifunctional FPV bombers are the result of the natural evolution of drones caused by war. This is a real revolution in the way we approach warfare. Once bomber drones are introduced into combat operations, we can expect a qualitative advantage on the battlefield, especially in modern warfare, where speed, flexibility and autonomy make all the difference.
